Science Screen Report for Kids: The Planet Venus – Volume 18 Issue Part 2

logo

For grades 2-5. From the acclaimed Science Screen Report DVD series, provided to schools nationwide free of charge since 1970. Baked and irradiated, Mercury is a cratered world; pock-marked by impactors that rained from space during the early development of our Solar System. With double sunrises, its day is twice as long as its year. Mercurys orbit is now perpetually shadowed from the scorching Sun; scientists think there may be ice deposited by comets. In contrast, the un-Earthly Venus is a lifeless planet with a dense, choking atmosphere with temperatures that could melt lead. Constantly shrouded in cloud, Venus could once have been Earths twin with oceans and continents, even simple life, but as the Sun matured, Venus became the hottest planet in our Solar System. From the Space Files series by York Films of London with special thanks to David Taylor.

Naked Science “Journey to Jupiter” (720p HD) Part 1/5

logo

Large enough to swallow 1000 Earths, Jupiter is a 90000 mile wide ball of gas and liquid. Surrounded by 63 moons it is a solar system in miniature. But this is a system of extremes; volcanic plumes rise hundreds of miles into space, storms the size of the Earth rage for hundreds of years, and strange motions beneath icy surfaces hint at a possibility of life. The Galileo probe overcame many trials to become the first craft to orbit an outer planet. It made amazing discoveries that shifted the way we view how the solar system formed and found the first evidence of liquid water on the icy moon Europa. New missions are set to return to the gas giant to find out more. Join Naked Science as we delve beneath the cloud tops to reveal the mysteries on this Journey to Jupiter.

NASA | Earth Science Week: Climate Change & The Global Ocean

logo

"Climate Change and The Global Ocean" is the first episode in the six-part series "Tides of Change", exploring amazing NASA ocean science to celebrate Earth Science Week 2009. To find out more visit climate.nasa.gov Want more? Subscribe to NASA on itunes! phobos.apple.com Or get tweeted by NASA: twitter.com We know climate change can affect us, but does climate change alter something as vast, deep and mysterious as our oceans? For years, scientists have studied the world's oceans by sending out ships and divers, deploying data-gathering buoys, and by taking aerial measurements from planes. But one of the better ways to understand oceans is to gain an even broader perspective - the view from space. nasa's Earth observing satellites do more than just take pictures of our planet. High-tech sensors gather data, including ocean surface temperature, surface winds, sea level, circulation, and even marine life. Information the satellites obtain help us understand the complex interactions driving the world's oceans today - and gain valuable insight into how the impacts of climate change on oceans might affect us on dry land.
