For grades 2-5. From the acclaimed Science Screen Report DVD series, provided to schools nationwide free of charge since 1970. Baked and irradiated, Mercury is a cratered world; pock-marked by impactors that rained from space during the early development of our Solar System. With double sunrises, its day is twice as long as its year. Mercurys orbit is now perpetually shadowed from the scorching Sun; scientists think there may be ice deposited by comets. In contrast, the un-Earthly Venus is a lifeless planet with a dense, choking atmosphere with temperatures that could melt lead. Constantly shrouded in cloud, Venus could once have been Earths twin with oceans and continents, even simple life, but as the Sun matured, Venus became the hottest planet in our Solar System. From the Space Files series by York Films of London with special thanks to David Taylor.

The US space agency spacecraft Messenger swooped within 199-kilometers of the planet Mercury, in preparation for a permanent orbit, beginning in 2011. Messenger, which is operated by remote control from Earth, will soon begin beaming data back which scientists hope will answer questions about the planet closest to the Sun. The unmanned spacecraft was launched by NASA in August, 2004. Messenger, stands for Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging. Planetary scientists hope ...

resolution images of planets and moons in our own Solar System, it has also taught us a lot about our own cosmic neighbourhood. Hubble cannot observe our Sun, or the closest planet, Mercury, because its instruments are light-sensitive and would be damaged. However, the telescope has examined every other planet in the solar system, including dwarf planets Pluto, Ceres and Eris. But, of course, Hubble does not just produce pretty pictures, it provides planetary scientists with vital ...

Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech bit.ly This artist's concept shows a celestial body about the size of our moon slamming at great speed into a body the size of Mercury. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope found evidence that a high-speed collision of this sort occurred a few thousand years ago around a young star, called HD 172555, still in the early stages of planet formation. The star is about 100 light-years from Earth. Spitzer detected the signatures of vaporized and melted rock, in addition to ...

Planet Smasher. Awesome song from Devin Townsend's amazing "Ziltoid the Omniscient" record, one of my favorites. It represents the latest and greatest of the Alien/Coffee metal sub-genre! Buy this record! The video is a "tribute" to various celetstial objects in our solar system, starting with Mercury, all the way to Eris, a dwarf planet orbiting at twice the distance of Pluto. Please rate and comment!
