Here’s a few clips from the London and Oxford heats. After four days on the road the team were shattered, especially having heard so much good science. The judges were treated to pitches on bacteria, black holes and sperm, and then we were struck by lightning… well, nearly. Only one heat remain – Scotland here we come.

Reload from sacredsarrah | 5T4RSCREAM On November 9th of this year, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will shoot, for the first time, lead bullets at the speed of light against each other in its superconductive, super-fluid cannon attempting to discover the “God particle” or the particle that gives other particles mass (theoretically known as the Higgs boson). The Higgs boson is a hypothetical massive scalar elementary particle predicted to exist by the Standard Model of particle physics. At present there are no known elementary scalar bosons (spin-0 particles) in nature, although many composite spin-0 particles are known. The existence of the particle is postulated as a means of resolving inconsistencies in current theoretical physics, and attempts are being made to confirm the existence of the particle by experimentation, using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and the Tevatron at Fermilab. Other theories exist that do not anticipate the Higgs boson, described elsewhere as the Higgsless model. en.wikipedia.org

nasa’s STEREO satellite captured the first images ever of a collision between a solar “hurricane”, called a coronal mass ejection (CME), and a comet. The collision caused the complete detachment of the comet’s plasma tail. Comet Encke was traveling within the orbit of Mercury when a CME scrunched the tail and eventually tore it off the comet. Scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) made the observations using the Heliospheric Imager (HI) in nrl’s Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) telescope suite aboard nasa’s Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO)-A spacecraft. Scientists have been aware of this spectacular phenomenon, the disconnection of the entire plasma tail of a comet, for some time. However, the conditions that lead to these events remained a mystery. Universe quantum theory… my point is: if comets etc are moving into the space using complicated mathematical formulas (that you are just learning about- because we are able now to follow their trajectories and sent satellites to intercept them in a certain point ) what about a superior entity (God) that oversee such strict movements and maybe there are other mathematical rules and science facts that you still need to learn about…smarter you become, more close to God you get.

The Large Hadron Collider is the largest and most complex scientific instrument ever built and the highest energy particle accelerator in the world. The accelerator is located 100 m underground and runs through both French and Swiss territory. (27km circumference) Latest: Geneva, 20 September 2008. During commissioning (without beam) of the final LHC sector (sector 34) at high current for operation at 5 tev, an incident occurred at mid-day on Friday 19 September resulting in a large helium leak into the tunnel. Preliminary investigations indicate that the most likely cause of the problem was a faulty electrical connection between two magnets, which probably melted at high current leading to mechanical failure. CERN s strict safety regulations ensured that at no time was there any risk to people. A full investigation is underway, but it is already clear that the sector will have to be warmed up for repairs to take place. This implies a minimum of two months down time for LHC operation. For the same fault, not uncommon in a normally conducting machine, the repair time would be a matter of days. Animation of a GIANT impact Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech bit.ly This artist’s concept shows a celestial body about the size of our moon slamming at great speed into a body the size of Mercury. nasa’s Spitzer Space Telescope found evidence that a high-speed collision of this sort occurred a few thousand years ago around a young star, called HD 172555, still in the early stages of planet formation. The star is about 100 light-years from Earth. Spitzer detected the signatures of vaporized and melted rock, in addition to rubble, all flung out from the giant impact. Further evidence from the infrared telescope shows that these two bodies must have been traveling at a velocity relative to each other of at least 10 kilometers per second (about 22400 miles per hour). As the bodies slammed into each other, a huge flash of light would have been emitted. Rocky surfaces were vaporized and melted, and hot matter was sprayed everywhere. Spitzer detected the vaporized rock in the form of silicon monoxide gas, and the melted rock as a glassy substance called obsidian. On Earth, obsidian can be found around volcanoes, and in black rocks called tektites often found around meteor craters. Shock waves from the collision would have traveled through the planet, throwing rocky rubble into space. Spitzer also detected the signatures of this rubble. In the end, the larger planet is left skinned, stripped of its outer layers. The core of the smaller body and most of its surface were absorbed by …

At the cores of many galaxies, supermassive black holes expel powerful jets of particles at nearly the speed of light. Just how they perform this feat has long been one of the mysteries of astrophysics. The leading theory says the particles are accelerated by tightly-twisted magnetic fields close to the black hole, but confirming that idea required an elusive close-up view of the jet’s inner throat. Now, using the unrivaled resolution of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), astronomers have watched material winding a corkscrew outward path and behaving exactly as predicted by the theory. Are are creationists just religious fanatics that believe ancient fairy tales? Has evolution been proven or are we being lied to? What does the fossil record say about the current theory of evolution? Is it true that the big bang is losing credibility among scientists? Does the fossil record show evidence of a global flood like the one described in the book of Genesis? As scientists search for the “God Particle” are they ignoring the existence of God? This video is the first in a series that gives scientific proof of a global flood and gives credence to the theory of a young earth.
