James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Part 2/2 – Finding earth-like (extrasolar) planets. — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope, scheduled for launch in 2014. JWST will find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, connecting the Big Bang to our own Milky Way Galaxy. JWST will peer through dusty clouds to see stars forming planetary systems, connecting the Milky Way to our own Solar System. JWST’s instruments will be designed to work primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, with some capability in the visible range. JWST will have a large mirror, 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter and a sunshield the size of a tennis court. Both the mirror and sunshade won’t fit onto the rocket fully open, so both will fold up and open once JWST is in outer space. How often do you get to see the moon this close up?? This is some footage I got last night, 9/8/08 of the moon. My Nexstar 8 telescope was magnifying the moon 120x, allowing the craters of the Northeastern and southeastern quadrants of the moon to be seen in detail. There was a cloud in front of the moon, however, I was still able to get some good shots. Some sections of the video are actually more than 120X, since I also used the zoom on the camera. Knowing that, there may have been segments of the video where the moon was around 200-250X (~2X zoom on camera). Sorry for the shakiness, but the mechanism for moving the telescope has a small amount of vibration and it’s difficult to use a digital camera in this way. Hope you enjoy! NASA rocks out as the space shuttle Atlantis zooms spaceward to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. www.nasa.gov From NASA: It’s a mission to once more push the boundaries of how deep in space and far back in time humanity can see. It’s a flight to again upgrade what already may be the most significant satellite ever launched. And, for the space shuttle, it’s a final visit to a dear, old friend. The STS-125 mission will return the space shuttle to the Hubble Space Telescope for one last visit before the shuttle fleet retires in 2010. Over 11 days and five spacewalks, the shuttle Atlantis crew will make repairs and upgrades to the telescope, leaving it better than ever and ready for another five years or more of research. The shuttle Discovery launched Hubble in 1990, and released it into an orbit 304 nautical miles above the Earth. Since then its circled Earth more than 97000 times and provided more than 4000 astronomers access to the stars not possible from inside Earths atmosphere. Hubble has helped answer some of sciences key questions and provided images that have awed and inspired the world. Weve actually seen an object that emitted its light about 13 billion years ago, said Hubble senior scientist Dave Leckrone. Since the universe is 13.7 billion years old, thats its infancy, the nursery. Spectacular and alarming pictures of UFO clouds have emerged worldwide showing eerie illuminated discs in the sky which look like alien spaceships. Are they from outer space or is there a natural phenomenon behind the sightings? Most of the pictures are from Indonesia but there have been similar sighting in Moscow, Romania, Florida and elsewhere in 2009. Since then, theories have come thick and fast. Possibilities include aliens, secret military experiments or natural consequences of climate change. In the film Independence Day, extraterrestrial spaceships hid behind odd round clouds. UFO expert and author Hartwig Hausdorf (54) said: This film idea is based on reports that we have from an uncountable number of eyewitnesses. In 2006 a flying saucer rose from a disused part of Chicago airport and floated at around 600 metres up in the sky. It then hid behind the clouds and later shot away at a speed of around 1000 km/h. Hausdorf added: The UFO rips a circular hole in the upper surface of the cloud, which it closes only after some time. These aircrafts have a manoeuvre capability that is impossible for conventional planes. Weather forecaster Karsten Brandt (36) looked at the photos.
