Hubble’s Universe Unfiltered 03: Hubble Servicing Delayed (Part 2). On September 27, 2008, NASA was two weeks away from a space shuttle mission to upgrade and repair the Hubble Space Telescope. That night, Hubble suffered an electronics failure and went into its protective safe mode. The servicing mission was soon put on hold as engineers scrambled to diagnose the problem and activate hardware that had not been used in eighteen years. Managers also had to consider whether the failure left Hubble without a backup for a critical system. NASA rocks out as the space shuttle Atlantis zooms spaceward to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. www.nasa.gov From NASA: It’s a mission to once more push the boundaries of how deep in space and far back in time humanity can see. It’s a flight to again upgrade what already may be the most significant satellite ever launched. And, for the space shuttle, it’s a final visit to a dear, old friend. The STS-125 mission will return the space shuttle to the Hubble Space Telescope for one last visit before the shuttle fleet retires in 2010. Over 11 days and five spacewalks, the shuttle Atlantis crew will make repairs and upgrades to the telescope, leaving it better than ever and ready for another five years or more of research. The shuttle Discovery launched Hubble in 1990, and released it into an orbit 304 nautical miles above the Earth. Since then its circled Earth more than 97000 times and provided more than 4000 astronomers access to the stars not possible from inside Earths atmosphere. Hubble has helped answer some of sciences key questions and provided images that have awed and inspired the world. Weve actually seen an object that emitted its light about 13 billion years ago, said Hubble senior scientist Dave Leckrone. Since the universe is 13.7 billion years old, thats its infancy, the nursery. WEPCTV guest contributor Miles O’Brien brings us this special report on the same day NASA astronauts complete their final space walk — and zero-g repair job — on the Hubble Space Telescope Servicing Mission #4. Miles says: ———— Astronauts spend a lot more time training for missions than flying in space. But I wouldn’t feel sorry for them as the training is an amazing adventure unto itself. They practice in airplanes that fly a roller-coaster pattern to give them brief stints of weightlessness (the so called Vomit Comet); they get to zoom around in supersonic T-38 training jets; they fly approaches to shuttle runways in a Gulfstream jet rigged up to fly (or more accurately, plummet) like a real orbiter; they get time in high-fidelity full motion simulators; they use virtual reality goggles to practice tasks they will perform in space – and if they are a spacewalker, they get to spend a lot of time in a huge swimming pool in a former hangar at Ellington Field – near the Johnson Space Center in Houston – learning the nuances of working in the void. Astronaut John Grunsfeld, who is an astronomer and a huge fan of the Hubble Space Telescope, invited me to join him during one of his 6 hour “runs” in the big pool – officially known as the Sonny Carter Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory. The region includes the open star cluster M38, emission nebula IC 410 with Tadpoles, Auriga’s own Flaming Star Nebula IC 405, and this interesting pair IC 417 (lower left) and NGC 1931. An imaginative eye toward the expansive IC 417 and diminutive NGC 1931 suggests a cosmic spider and fly.
