If it takes work or energy to pull them apart, then the binding energy is the amount of energy it takes to completely separate them. Similarly the binding energy in a nucleus is the amount of energy it takes to completely separate the protons and neutrons, (collectively called nucleons.) There are two forces acting inside the nucleus of atoms. The nuclear force — a residuum of the strong force that holds quarks together — is pulling the neutrons and protons together — and the electric charge on the protons is pushing them apart. The strong force is a lot stronger than the electric force at short ranges up to two and a half times the proton diameter, but at larger distances the electric force dominates. This increase in binding energy continues until we get to iron and nickel where the nucleus has about 60 nucleons in it. At this point, the nucleus has a radius more than two and a half nucleons wide, which you remember is the range at which the repulsive ElectroMagnetic Force begins to dominate.. . So as we add nucleons past this point the electric force trying to tear the nucleus apart starts winning and each added nucleon is a little less-tightly bound. — The Cassiopeia Project is an effort to make high

One of the Universe’s open questions maybe a step closer to be answered thanks to over 30 atoms of antihydrogen that have been trapped and stored by scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, Cern. According to a written statement, this opens the path to new ways of making detailed measurements of antihydrogen, which will allow scientists to compare matter and antimatter, the latter being what annihilates ordinary matter in a single explosive flash of energy.

A science rap about the world revealed through science and technology. It starts in outer space with the birth of the universe, then comes down to Earth before describing some things we have learnt about ourselves. The rap was produced in collaboration with Alison Somerville at the Science Photo Library (SPL) who produced the video. SPL are a provider of scientific images and have a special schools subscription service – www.sciencephoto.com This video can be viewed in HD, and can also be found on the SPL website. If you like science raps and want to see more, check out www.scienceraps.co.uk. Just click the video tab to view a selection of science raps from across the world. Life Beyond Earth: Origin And Evolution Of Life In The Universe – Best Of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos (Part 20). Carl Edward Sagan, Ph.D. (1934-1996) was an American astronomer, astrochemist, author, and highly successful popularizer of astronomy, astrophysics and other natural sciences. He pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He is world-famous for writing popular science books and for co-writing and presenting the award-winning 1980 television series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage”, which has been seen by more than 600 million people in over 60 countries, making it the most widely watched PBS program in history. A book to accompany the program was also published. He also wrote the novel “Contact”, the basis for the 1997 Robert Zemecki’s film of the same name starring Jodie Foster. During his lifetime, Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and popular articles and was author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books. In his works, he frequently advocated sceptical inquiry, secular humanism, and the scientific method. • www.carlsagan.com ‘Our Place in the Cosmos’ (ft. Q-NASA Hubble and space Nebula

logo

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a space telescope that was carried into orbit by the space shuttle in April 1990. It is named after the American astronomer Edwin Hubble. Although not the first space telescope, Hubble is one of the largest and most versatile, and is well-known as both a vital research tool and a public relations boon for astronomy. The HST is a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency, and is one of NASA’s Great Observatories, along with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.[4]
