CERN News 31st May 2010: First Appearance of a Tau Neutrino Première apparition du neutrino du Tau Físicos participantes en el experimento OPERA en el laboratorio de física del Gran Sasso, en Italia, han logrado identificar la pieza que faltaba del rompecabezas principal que da forma al Universo, gracias a la primera observación directa de una partícula de neutrino que cambia de caratcerísticas, al modo de un ‘camaleón’. Según el laboratorio europeo de investigación nuclear (CERN), el avance representa un gran impulso para su programa del colisionador de partículas LHC, que revelará secretos fundamentales del cosmos. Un neutrino muónico producido en el colisionador SPS del CERN, tras atravesar 732 km. por el interior de la corteza terrestre, se ha transformado en un neutrino tauónico que se ha desintegrado en un tauón (leptón tau), que tras recorrer unos cientos de micrómetros durante unas billonésimas de segundo ha colisionado con un átomo de un detector del experimento OPERA en el laboratorio subterráneo de Gran Sasso, en el norte de Italia, produciendo un bosón W que a su vez se ha desintegrado en tres partículas cargadas que han sido observadas en los escintiladores de dicho experimento. Detrás de esa terminología científica se encuentra la prueba tan buscada de que las tres variedades de neutrinos -las partículas sub-atómicas que forman con otros elementos básicos del universo — pueden cambiar la apariencia, como el camaleón.
