This is a sample video of apowerpoint presentation that can be found at www.sciencepowerpoint.com which is one part of a teaching unit for students in grades 5-10. Each second represents one slide on the actual Powerpoint Presentation. THE ASTROFE covers Earth System History and Astronomy Topics. This unit includes an interactive and engaging Powerpoint Presentation of 909 slides with built in class notes (Red Slides), lab activities, project ideas, discussion questions, assessments (Quiz Wiz), and challenge questions with answers. Text is in large print (32 font) and is placed at the top of each slide so it can seen and read from all angles of a classroom. Also included is a 13 page assessment (THE ASTROFE) that chronologically goes with the slideshow for nightly homework and the end of the unit assessment, as well as a 10 page modified assessment. 12 pages of class notes with images are also included for students who require modifications, as well as answer keys to both ASTROFE’s for support professionals, teachers, and home school parents. 39 video shorts (FLV files) are provided and a slide within the slideshow cues teacher / parent when the videos are most relevant to play. Video shorts usually range from 2-7 minutes and are included in organized folders. Two Powerpoint Jeopardy games are included. Answers to the Powerpoint Jeopardy games are also provided in Powerpoint form so students can self-assess. Lastly, several class games such as guess the hidden picture …

www.ted.com Science educator Roy Gould and Microsoft’s Curtis Wong give an astonishing sneak preview of Microsoft’s new WorldWide Telescope — a technology that combines feeds from satellites and telescopes all over the world and the heavens, and weaves them together holistically to build a comprehensive view of our universe. (Yes, it’s the technology that made Robert Scoble cry.)

Once available only for the enjoyment of the sighted, the Hubble Space Telescope’s dramatic glimpse of the Carina Nebula, a gigantic cloud of gas that bustles with star-making activity, can now be “seen” by blind students, as well. A touchable, 17-by-11-inch color image of the nebula that’s been embossed with lines, slashes, and other markings allow the visually impaired to feel what they cannot see and form a picture of Carina in their minds.

The first national observatories were built for two practical reasons: to provide accurate timekeeping, and to assist surveyors with mapping. As technology developed, telescopes became larger and provided more detailed images. Astronomers, in turn, became increasing interested in understanding the stars and objects that they could now see using these higher-resolution telescopes. The 15″ refracting telescope featured in this video was built by the Warner and Swasey company of Cleveland, Ohio. It was originally located at Ottawa’s Dominion Observatory. With the closure of this observatory in 1970s, it was moved to the Canada Science and Technology Museum. It is now housed in the Museum’s Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory, where it is used for public astronomy education.
