Hubble Images Galaxies Colliding

logo

Astronomy textbooks typically present galaxies as staid, solitary, and majestic island worlds of glittering stars. But galaxies have a dynamical side. They have close encounters that sometimes end in grand mergers and overflowing sites of new star birth as the colliding galaxies morph into wondrous new shapes.

Dr. Jim Garvin investigates Mars like environments in Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. Shooting this video, I almost fell into a giant cauldron of boiling mud as I walked out in the lake to get a better shot. Later that day, my right foot broke through the thin crust of mud and into a fumerol. My boot was covered in thick, sulfer smelling boiling mud, but no injuries. It was kinda cool actually.

The Case for Mars – Symphony of Science

—– English —– You can find tose videos in the official page of the project: symphonyofscience.com, and dowload them or the mp3. Also, their YouTube channel is http Our thought about those videos is that they are an amazing way to tribute to those scientists, who make science a wonderful world for everyone. We hope you enjoy them, as we do. —– Letra / Lyrics —– [Robert Zubrin] Mars is the next logical step In our space program It’s the challenge that’s been staring us in the face For the past 30 years It has water, it has carbon, It has a 24 hour day It has geothermal energy Mars is a place we can settle [Carl Sagan] There is a giant rift in its surface 5000 kilometers long There is a volcano as wide as Arizona [Zubrin] So there’s the choice in life One either grows or one decays Grow or die I think we should grow [Sagan] Mars is a world of wonders [Brian Cox] It has canyons, river valleys, and giant ice sheets [Sagan] Mars is a world of wonders [Zubrin] It shouldn’t be humans to Mars in 50 years It should be humans to Mars in

WEPCTV guest contributor Miles O’Brien brings us this special report on the same day NASA astronauts complete their final space walk — and zero-g repair job — on the Hubble Space Telescope Servicing Mission #4. Miles says: ———— Astronauts spend a lot more time training for missions than flying in space. But I wouldn’t feel sorry for them as the training is an amazing adventure unto itself. They practice in airplanes that fly a roller-coaster pattern to give them brief stints of weightlessness (the so called Vomit Comet); they get to zoom around in supersonic T-38 training jets; they fly approaches to shuttle runways in a Gulfstream jet rigged up to fly (or more accurately, plummet) like a real orbiter; they get time in high-fidelity full motion simulators; they use virtual reality goggles to practice tasks they will perform in space – and if they are a spacewalker, they get to spend a lot of time in a huge swimming pool in a former hangar at Ellington Field – near the Johnson Space Center in Houston – learning the nuances of working in the void. Astronaut John Grunsfeld, who is an astronomer and a huge fan of the Hubble Space Telescope, invited me to join him during one of his 6 hour “runs” in the big pool – officially known as the Sonny Carter Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory. I watched him as he practiced the most challenging spacewalk of his long career – the resuscitation of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. Worried as he was about accomplishing this intricate

The first national observatories were built for two practical reasons: to provide accurate timekeeping, and to assist surveyors with mapping. As technology developed, telescopes became larger and provided more detailed images. Astronomers, in turn, became increasing interested in understanding the stars and objects that they could now see using these higher-resolution telescopes. The 15″ refracting telescope featured in this video was built by the Warner and Swasey company of Cleveland, Ohio. It was originally located at Ottawa’s Dominion Observatory. With the closure of this observatory in 1970s, it was moved to the Canada Science and Technology Museum. It is now housed in the Museum’s Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory, where it is used for public astronomy education.
