This is a sample video of apowerpoint presentation that can be found at www.sciencepowerpoint.com which is one part of a teaching unit for students in grades 5-10. Each second represents one slide on the actual Powerpoint Presentation. THE ASTROFE covers Earth System History and Astronomy Topics. This unit includes an interactive and engaging Powerpoint Presentation of 909 slides with built in class notes (Red Slides), lab activities, project ideas, discussion questions, assessments (Quiz Wiz), and challenge questions with answers. Text is in large print (32 font) and is placed at the top of each slide so it can seen and read from all angles of a classroom. Also included is a 13 page assessment (THE ASTROFE) that chronologically goes with the slideshow for nightly homework and the end of the unit assessment, as well as a 10 page modified assessment. 12 pages of class notes with images are also included for students who require modifications, as well as answer keys to both ASTROFE’s for support professionals, teachers, and home school parents. 39 video shorts (FLV files) are provided and a slide within the slideshow cues teacher / parent when the videos are most relevant to play. Video shorts usually range from 2-7 minutes and are included in organized folders. Two Powerpoint Jeopardy games are included. Answers to the Powerpoint Jeopardy games are also provided in Powerpoint form so students can self-assess. Lastly, several class games such as guess the hidden picture

Frontiers/Controversies in Astrophysics (ASTR 160) Class begins with a review of the first problem set. Newton’s Third Law is applied in explaining how exoplanets are found. An overview of the Solar System is given; each planet is presented individually and its special features are highlighted. Astronomy is discussed as an observational science, and the subject of how to categorize objects in the Solar System is addressed. The Pluto controversy is given special attention and both sides of the argument regarding its status are considered. Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2007.

Please visit solarsystem.nasa.gov for more fascinating space facts from nasa’s Solar System Exploration website. What is a planet? This question has been pondered by many since the early Greeks came up with the word “planetes.” Since then the number of “planets” in our solar system has fluctuated, sometimes numbering as high as 15, before it was determined that some were actually asteroids. One such celestial object is Pluto, which became the 9th planet in 1930 to much controversy. Then, in 2005, Eris was discovered and hailed as a possible 10th planet. Our technology has progressed to the point where we are able to see farther into space than ever before. In so doing, we have discovered a section in our solar system called the Kuiper Belt that has the potential to hold hundreds, if not thousands, of objects similar to Pluto and Eris. Much like other sciences, such as Biology, where one may discover a new species, classification is a common and needed process which groups like objects for purposes of comparison and further study. The classification of our planets is no exception to this scientific practice, and the astronomical community is currently undergoing a discussion debating the issue of how to classify, or define, a planet. Using 3D animation, this video was created to better illustrate the history behind the discussion defining “What is a planet?”and to outline some of the traits that may be associated with the definition of a planet. So come travel with us as
