Clues that ice lay beneath the dry, dusty Martian surface came from images taken from orbit showing irregular shapes on the ground. Smith and his colleagues theorized they were caused by cycles of freezing and thawing over time, and were verified when the lander’s robot arm dug trenches exposing ice just inches below.
