Explore the Universe from its tiniest particle to its greatest expanse. Cosmic Voyage begins on Earth, firmly grounded in human perspective, and asks a fascinating question: Where exactly do we stand in the vastness of the cosmos? Where, between quark and quasar, is our place in space and time? You depart from Venice, where Galileo first demonstrated the use of the telescope. In 26 “”powers of ten”" stages, you ascend through our solar system and the Milky Way to the outer edges of the observable universe. Returning to Earth, you enter a drop of water and descend through sixteen ever-diminishing circles to the universe’s tiniest particle, a quark. The film features a “”cosmic zoom”" as viewers are transported across millions of years as galaxies collide, the solar system forms and life begins on a young planet Earth. James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Part 2/2 – Finding earth-like (extrasolar) planets. — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope, scheduled for launch in 2014. JWST will find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, connecting the Big Bang to our own Milky Way Galaxy. JWST will peer through dusty clouds to see stars forming planetary systems, connecting the Milky Way to our own Solar System. JWST’s instruments will be designed to work primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, with some capability in the visible range. JWST will have a large mirror, 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter and a sunshield the size of a tennis court. Both the mirror and sunshade won’t fit onto the rocket fully open, so both will fold up and open once JWST is in outer space. JWST will reside in an orbit about 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from the Earth. • www.jwst.nasa.gov The Universe: Another Earth HD- www.youtube.com ‘Earths are common,’ NASA scientist says- www.thestar.com CNN: Galaxy May be Full of ‘Earths,’ Alien life – www.cnn.com Earth-like Planet Discoveries on the Horizon (8/1/2010)- www.digitaljournal.com Earth’s Twin Planet Will Be Found By The End Of The Year, leading Astronomer says (26/1/2010)- www.dailymail.co.uk Looking for Alien Earths? A Roll Cloud Over Uruguay These rare long clouds may form near advancing cold fronts. In particular, a downdraft from an advancing storm front can cause moist warm air to rise, cool below its dew point, and so form a cloud. When this happens uniformly along an extended front, a roll cloud may form. Roll clouds may actually have air circulating along the long horizontal axis of the cloud. A roll cloud is not thought to be able to morph into a tornado. • Learn more: antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov ? The Spotty Surface of Betelgeuse Betelgeuse really is a big star. If placed at the center of our Solar System it would extend to the orbit of Jupiter. But like all stars except the Sun, the red supergiant is so distant it usually appears as a single point of light, even in large telescopes. The intriguing picture shows two, large, bright, star spots. The spots potentially represent enormous convective cells rising from below the supergiant’s surface. They are bright because they’re hotter than the rest of the surface, but both spots and surface are cooler than the Sun. Betelgeuse is about 600 light-years away. • Learn more: antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov ?
