For grades 2-5. From the acclaimed Science Screen Report DVD series, provided to schools nationwide free of charge since 1970. Baked and irradiated, Mercury is a cratered world; pock-marked by impactors that rained from space during the early development of our Solar System. With double sunrises, its day is twice as long as its year. Mercurys orbit is now perpetually shadowed from the scorching Sun; scientists think there may be ice deposited by comets. In contrast, the un-Earthly Venus is a lifeless planet with a dense, choking atmosphere with temperatures that could melt lead. Constantly shrouded in cloud, Venus could once have been Earths twin with oceans and continents, even simple life, but as the Sun matured, Venus became the hottest planet in our Solar System. From the Space Files series by York Films of London with special thanks to David Taylor.

This presentation explains the scope of the search for ET and the problems that we face along the way. The search for life elsewhere in the universe is limited to our present understanding of life as we know it. Therefore we have set the requirements for ET based on what we know about Earth-life. We have begun to search for ET and our top priority is Europa. We have learned that Europa harbours a large body of liquid water underneath its ice. Scientists speculate that Europa has hydrothermal ...

History Channel The Universe Space Travel. When man finally broke free of the Earth's gravitational pull the dream of traveling to other planets became a reality. Today scientists are proposing a bizarre array of technologies in the hope of traveling faster through space: from space craft sporting sails that catch laser beams, to propulsion engines powered by a bizarre entity known as anti-matter. Finally explore the science behind the seemingly fanciful notion of warp-drive and a ...

Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech bit.ly This artist's concept shows a celestial body about the size of our moon slamming at great speed into a body the size of Mercury. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope found evidence that a high-speed collision of this sort occurred a few thousand years ago around a young star, called HD 172555, still in the early stages of planet formation. The star is about 100 light-years from Earth. Spitzer detected the signatures of vaporized and melted rock, in addition to ...
