PREVIEWCLIP: Olympus Mons, the tallest and deepest volcano in our Solar System. Although Mars is about half the size of Earth, it takes nearly twice as long to orbit our Sun. NASA’s 21st century inter-planetary robots landed on the once watery surface and sent back images and collected data. Coupled with Earth-bound complex telescopes, multi-disciplinary studies continue to enhance our knowledge of our closest neighbour.

From the acclaimed Science Screen Report DVD series, provided to schools nationwide free of charge since 1970. Saturn, Lord of the Rings & Outer Gas Giants, Uranus & Neptune Second largest of the gas planets, Saturn rules a dazzling domain. Its famous rings are billions of moon-lets that range from the size of tanks to grains of dust. The planet is so light it would float in water, and its largest moon, Titan, is bigger than Mercury. Uranus is twice as far from the Sun as Saturn, while Neptune is so distant it takes 165 years to orbit the Sun. Uranus rotates on its side, possibly knocked over in a collision. Triton, Neptunes largest moon, is the coldest place in our Solar System.

On March 31, 1989 headlines informed that Phobos 2, before losing contact, captured some strange photos of an unidentified object. Phobos 2 operated normally during its cruise phase, travelling the millions of miles from the Earth to Mars with no mechnical problems. It successfully gathered data about the Sun, Earth, Mars, and the interplanetary medium. On March 27, 1989, as it approached within 50 meters of the moon Phobos, it was set to drop a mobile “hopper” lander and a stationary platform. But just before doing so, contact was mysteriously lost.
