Weather Balloon Photography – Near Outer Space

logo

JEP-1 This is Justin, Evan, and Patrick’s first attempt at near outer space photography (Named for their initials) using a weather balloon. Our launch point was in Cartersville, GA and we landed in the middle of the Chattahoochee National Forest 62 nautical miles away. We calculate that our balloon popped at ~80000 ft. We have plans for a larger balloon and better equipment for a second launch in July 2010.

Phil Plait-Point of Inquiry 3/4

logo

Part 4 www.youtube.com Phil Plait works in the physics and astronomy department at Sonoma State University. In the early 90s, he started Badastronomy.com, which has become a popular website focused on educating the public about astronomy and space science, especially as regards common misconceptions and pseudoscientific astronomy claims. In recent years, he has also been involved with debunking several more general pseudoscientific theories. In March 2006, Science magazine celebrated the Bad Astronomy website, praising Plaits blog, begun in March 2005. This blog was also a finalist for the 2006 Weblog Award (the Bloggie). The author of one book, The Bad Astronomer, Phil Plait is also a regular contributor to many online publications, including The Huffington Post. In this interview with DJ Grothe, Phil Plait discusses science education, the need for the public appreciation of science, public investment in space science, and how such investment benefits society. He also addresses the question of sciences compatibility with religion, and explores social conflicts surrounding the teaching of evolution in the public schools. www.pointofinquiry.org

Snow Falls on Mars

logo

ANCHOR: A new discovery by NASA scientists shows that snow was vaporizing before reaching the Mars surface. The Mars Lander Phoenix helped the scientists discover water on this rocky planet. Lets take a look. STORY: Since touching down on Mars in late May the Phoenix lander has established that liquid water once flowed on the surface of the Red Planet. It now appears that snow falls there too. This image, recorded by the NASA explorer, detected snow, frost and cloud forming in the Martian atmosphere above the north pole. But the snow is vaporizing before it reaches the ground. NASA scientist Jim Whiteway said the mission was trying to find evidence that snow is actually landing on the surface – providing a tantalising clue that life may once have existed on Mars. [Jim Whiteway, NASA Lead Scientist]: “And we’re going to be watching very closely over the next month for evidence that the snow is actually landing on the surface. And this is a very important factor in the hydrological cycle on Mars, with the exchange of water between the surface and the atmosphere.” Time is short – the onset of the Martian winter will soon ‘kill-off’ the solar-powered lander. It’s already survived far longer than expected – but soon the sun will dip below the horizon until next April, consigning the craft to a dusty Martian grave.
