The huge shuttle is 36 m long, 16 m high and weights about 80 tons. As was the case of the US model, reusability after near-earth space flights was of major importance. The BURAN prototype OK-GLI shown in the TECHNIK MUSEUM SPEYER was built in 1984 and was used for testing gliding-flight and landing after reentry into the atmosphere. speyer.technik-museum.de

Hubble’s Universe Unfiltered 03: Hubble Servicing Delayed (Part 2). On September 27, 2008, NASA was two weeks away from a space shuttle mission to upgrade and repair the Hubble Space Telescope. That night, Hubble suffered an electronics failure and went into its protective safe mode. The servicing mission was soon put on hold as engineers scrambled to diagnose the problem and activate hardware that had not been used in eighteen years. Managers also had to consider whether the failure left Hubble without a backup for a critical system. It will be, however, the fifth servicing mission to Hubble. The third servicing mission was split into two pieces: SM3a occurred in 1999, while SM3b took place in 2002. The numbering of the servicing missions has stuck with the original plans, and was not updated to reflect the true count of the missions. * In contrast with Hubble’s low Earth orbit of about 600 km above the planet’s surface, most communications satellites reside much higher in the sky. NASA rocks out as the space shuttle Atlantis zooms spaceward to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. www.nasa.gov From NASA: It’s a mission to once more push the boundaries of how deep in space and far back in time humanity can see. It’s a flight to again upgrade what already may be the most significant satellite ever launched. And, for the space shuttle, it’s a final visit to a dear, old friend. The STS-125 mission will return the space shuttle to the Hubble Space Telescope for one last visit before the shuttle fleet retires in 2010. Over 11 days and five spacewalks, the shuttle Atlantis crew will make repairs and upgrades to the telescope, leaving it better than ever and ready for another five years or more of research. The shuttle Discovery launched Hubble in 1990, and released it into an orbit 304 nautical miles above the Earth. Since then its circled Earth more than 97000 times and provided more than 4000 astronomers access to the stars not possible from inside Earths atmosphere. Hubble has helped answer some of sciences key questions and provided images that have awed and inspired the world. Weve actually seen an object that emitted its light about 13 billion years ago, said Hubble senior scientist Dave Leckrone.
