Total Lunar Eclipse December 21, 2010

logo

Owned and produced by Kimberly Mallett – Photographer Kimberly shares her stunning photos of the Winter Solstice -Christmas Lunar Eclipse as seen from Toronto Ontario December 21, 2010. Montage photos of Lunar Eclipse Start time: 12:13pm – 5:01am. The last time these astronomical events took place in sync was on Dec. 21, 1638, and it won’t happen again until at least 2094. I did not use a tripod, or remote and hand held to capture each photo. You will see the photos, as seen by my view, and through lens, no photo shopping was done. It was -7c. It was a amazing cosmic historical journey and blessed to experience. (: © Kimberly Mallett Photographer & Video – Photos are strictly forbidden to be copied or used. Photos are available. Near space weather balloon

logo

Time lapse video of our engineering project at UMass Amherst. Our weather balloon, named the Shuttlecraft, reached an altitude of approximately 104000 ft. Pictures were taken every 5 seconds during the fight with a Canon a560 digital camera. The balloon traveled west as it gained altitude and then turned east where it climbed to its burst altitude. Upon reaching the maximum altitude, the balloon popped and the capsule descended back to earth. It landed off the coast of Plum Island, MA. The total trip time from launch to splashdown is 2.8 hours. Its ascent took 142 minutes and 20 seconds and it took 25 minutes and 55 seconds for it to descend back to earth. The capsule turned up four days later on the beach where it was found by a self proclaimed “Professional Beach bum” who kindly called us to arrange a pickup. After four days in the Atlantic we managed to retrieve the 8gb SDHC and get the pictures. Pictures include the Connecticut River and surrounding area, Granby MA, Holyoke MA, the former Mount Tom Ski Area, and the Atlantic Ocean. Special Thanks go to the “professional beach bum” who was kind enough to call us and meet us so we could retrieve our project. Without his help, our project would have been lost. We wish him well in his retirement. We would also like to thank Invensys for kindly sponsoring a second launch. We are currently testing the replacement parts and plan on launching it within the next 2 weeks. If you have any questions about our project, feel free

The Phoenix Lander, expected to last just 90 Martian days, is still exploring the red planet’s air, ice and soil many weeks after it was expected to die. More than 130 days after landing near the planet’s north pole, the lander has recently discovered snow falling from clouds as winter on northern Mars approaches.

Alternative 3 1977 (Science Report) Part 3/6

logo

In the late 1970s the UK’s Anglia Television ran a weekly science series, Science Report. The final episode of the series The episode began by detailing the so-called “brain drain:” a number of mysterious disappearances and deaths of physicists, engineers, astronomers, and others in related fields. Among the strange deaths reported was that of one “Professor Ballantine” of Jodrell Bank. Before his death, Ballantine delivers a videotape to an academic friend, but when viewed on an ordinary videotape machine the only result is radio static. According to the research presented in the episode, it was hypothesized that the missing scientists were involved in a secret American/Soviet plan in outer space, and further suggested that interplanetary space travel had been possible for much longer than was commonly accepted. The episode featured an Apollo astronaut “Bob Grodin,” who claims to have stumbled on a mysterious lunar base during his moonwalk. It was claimed that scientists had determined that the Earth’s surface would be unable to support life for much longer, due to pollution leading to catastrophic climate change. It was proposed that there were three alternatives to this problem: the first involved the detonation of nuclear bombs in the stratosphere in order to allow the pollution to escape. The second alternative was the construction of an elaborate underground city, a solution reminiscent of the finale of Dr Strangelove. The third alternative, the so-called

Amazing Space Photos From A Helium Balloon: Images of earth from space

logo

A father-of-three from Huddersfield has captured images of earth from space using a weather balloon. Starting in October 2008, 38-year-old Robert Harrison filled 12 High Altitude Balloons with helium and launched them 35 kilometres into the atmosphere. Having wrapped a digital camera and Global Positioning System device in loft insulation and linked it to computer software on the ground, he More..was able to track the balloons’ progress. He said: “The first time I saw the pictures, I couldn’t believe it.” The rare images caught the attention of experts in the field and it wasn’t long before Harrison received a telephone call from NASA. In total, the project cost Harrison £4000 and he believes the achievement was worth every penny.

Understanding The Sun – The Heliophysics Program

Understanding The Sun – The NASA Heliophysics Program. — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — Heliophysics Science We live in an exciting environment: the heliosphere, the exotic outer atmosphere of a star. The space beyond Earths protective atmospheric cocoon is highly variable and far from benign. It is the one part of the cosmos accessible to direct scientific investigation, our only hands-on astrophysical laboratory. Our technological society is increasingly susceptible to space weather disturbances in this curious region. A host of interconnected physical processes, strongly influenced by solar variability, affect the health and safety of travelers in space and the habitability of alien environments. We call the science of the Sun-Solar System Connections “Heliophysics”. Building on nasas rich history of exploration of the Earths neighborhood and distant planetary systems, we are poised to develop the quantitative knowledge needed to help assure the safety of the new generation of human and robotic explorers. The Heliophysics Program has been completely reevaluated to address the needs of the Vision for Space Exploration. nasas future research and exploration within its Heliophysics program aims to “explore the Sun-Earth system to understand the Sun and its effects on Earth, the solar system, and the space environmental conditions that will be experienced by explorers, and to demonstrate technologies that
