Astronomers Find Oldest Galaxy

logo

Astronomers believe they’ve found the oldest thing they’ve ever seen in the universe: It’s a galaxy far, far away from a time long, long ago. Hidden in a Hubble Space Telescope photo released earlier this year is a small smudge of light that European astronomers now calculate is a galaxy from 13.1 billion years ago. That’s a time when the universe was very young, just shy of 600 million years old. That would make it the earliest and most distant galaxy seen so far. Source: AP/ESO

IMAX: Cosmic Voyage HD pt 4/4 (Narrated by Morgan Freeman)

logo

Explore the Universe from its tiniest particle to its greatest expanse. Cosmic Voyage begins on Earth, firmly grounded in human perspective, and asks a fascinating question: Where exactly do we stand in the vastness of the cosmos? Where, between quark and quasar, is our place in space and time? You depart from Venice, where Galileo first demonstrated the use of the telescope. In 26 “”powers of ten”" stages, you ascend through our solar system and the Milky Way to the outer edges of the observable universe. Returning to Earth, you enter a drop of water and descend through sixteen ever-diminishing circles to the universe’s tiniest particle, a quark. The film features a “”cosmic zoom”" as viewers are transported across millions of years as galaxies collide, the solar system forms and life begins on a young planet Earth. Life Beyond Earth: Origin And Evolution Of Life In The Universe – Best Of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos (Part 20). Carl Edward Sagan, Ph.D. (1934-1996) was an American astronomer, astrochemist, author, and highly successful popularizer of astronomy, astrophysics and other natural sciences. He pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He is world-famous for writing popular science books and for co-writing and presenting the award-winning 1980 television series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage”, which has been seen by more than 600 million people in over 60 countries, making it the most widely watched PBS program in history. A book to accompany the program was also published. He also wrote the novel “Contact”, the basis for the 1997 Robert Zemecki’s film of the same name starring Jodie Foster. During his lifetime, Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and popular articles and was author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books. In his works, he frequently advocated sceptical inquiry, secular humanism, and the scientific method. • www.carlsagan.com ‘Our Place in the Cosmos’ (ft. Starry-eyed Hubble Celebrates 20 Years Of Awe And Discovery

logo

Hubblecast 36: “Gifts from the sky – Honouring 20 years of Hubble Space Telescope”. The best recognised, longest-lived and most prolific space observatory zooms past a milestone of 20 years of operation. On 24 April 1990, the Space Shuttle and crew of STS-31 were launched to deploy the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope into a low-Earth orbit. What followed was one of the most remarkable sagas of the space age. — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — Hubbles unprecedented capabilities have made it one of the most powerful science instruments ever conceived by humans, and certainly the one most embraced by the public. Hubbles discoveries have revolutionised nearly all areas of current astronomical research, from planetary science to cosmology. And, its pictures are unmistakably out of this world. At times Hubbles starry odyssey has played out like a space soap opera: with broken equipment, a bleary-eyed primary mirror and even a Space Shuttle rescue/repair mission cancellation. But the ingenuity and dedication of Hubble scientists, engineers, and NASA and ESA astronauts have allowed the observatory to rebound time and time again. Its crisp vision continues to challenge scientists with exciting new surprises and to enthral the public with ever more evocative colour images. NASA, ESA and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) are celebrating Hubbles journey of exploration with a stunning new picture. Another

20 years ago, on the 24 April 1990, the Space Shuttle Discovery launched the Hubble Space Telescope, a joint NASA-ESA mission. Its discoveries have resulted in, quite probably, the most significant advances in astronomy since Galileo’s telescope. It has provided the world’s scientists with profound and unforeseen insights into the Universe, with hundreds of thousands of images of astounding beauty. The space telescope has greatly increased the publics curiosity and fascination for the mysteries of the Universe and our place in it. — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — Starry-eyed Hubble celebrates 20 years of awe and discovery The most prolific space observatory will zoom past its 20-year milestone this weekend. ITV News Asteroid Impact did Kill The Dinosaurs The extinction of the dinosaurs and half of all species on Earth was caused by a 15 kilometre-wide asteroid slamming into the planet 65 million years ago and not massive volcanic eruptions, say scientists.
